About this course >

The Early Childhood Studies degree synthesises cutting edge professional policy with academic rigour. You will graduate able to work to the highest of standards within a variety of settings. You will develop a practical understanding that is grounded in theory, both traditional and contemporary, as you learn about the stages children may go through as they progress through the early years of their life, exploring what helps children to be ready for their future.

The current statutory early years framework and curriculum is reflected throughout the programme and alternative approaches to learning are studied in a national and international context.

You will explore how play is a vital component for children’s learning and holistic development. You will also study difficulties and problems children may face, from safeguarding issues to disability and specific needs. You will examine how to ensure that all children receive the right support and protection in order to have the best possible chances in life to reach their full potential.

Year 1

Your first year of study incorporates a range of modules which form the link between what you may have studied previously and the second year of the degree. You will learn how to support the wellbeing, learning and development of children by studying modules covering play and its relationship to learning, safeguarding and child protection, child development and health safety and care routines. These modules are designed to build on familiar knowledge and prepare you for future study and positive achievement in your placement. To enhance your success on placement at the end of the year you will take part in a range of activities specifically designed as professional preparation for the work experience.

Year 2

Your second year will allow you build on your learning, extending your knowledge, skills and abilities and explore your own ideas and thoughts on the topics. You will learn how to design your own research in preparation for your final project in your final year. There will be a second opportunity to undertake a professional placement, build your practice and team-working skills. You will be encouraged to reflect on your experiences and aptitudes and at this point we offer you the opportunity to explore your career choices with our support and advice.

Year 3

The focus of your final year of study is pulling together the knowledge and skills gained over the previous two years about society, diversity, children, families and education. You are encouraged to advance further as a confident and critical thinker who is ready to take their place in the world of work. Final year modules have been designed for you to explore your own thoughts about what you have learned and includes study of Special Educational Needs, Leadership and Multi-agency working. You will have a unique experience of studying sociology with the opportunity to produce your own creative assessment. You will have first-hand experience as a researcher as you develop your project proposal from the previous year.​

Year 1 - 15.3% of scheduled learning and teaching; 195 hours of scheduled learning and teaching; 930 hours of independent teaching; 150 hours on placement

Year 2 - 14% of scheduled learning and teaching; 176 hours of scheduled learning and teaching; 929 hours of independent teaching; 150 hours on placement

Year 3 – 9.8% of scheduled learning and teaching; 118 hours of scheduled learning and teaching; 1,082 hours of independent teaching

Modules on this programme are delivered through a combination of lectures workshops and small group tutorials/seminars.

On this programme students undertake two 20-credit Professional Development and Placement modules, which feature six-week work placements in the second semester of both Level 4 and Level 5 following periods of preparation.

At Level 6 all students undertake a Research Project which is an independent study on a topic of individual interest which allows an extended opportunity for critical thinking and analysis.
Students are offered opportunities to develop links with guest speakers, mentors and alumni in their final year. There will be various opportunities throughout the programme to engage in extra-curricular activities and volunteering related to your graduate prospects.

We make extensive use of Moodle, Leeds Trinity's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to support class sessions, and of e-resources to enable 24/7 access to learning materials from off-campus.


Breakdown of course assessment:

Year 1 – 96.7% coursework; 3.3% practical exams

Year 2 - 100% coursework

Year 3 - 100% coursework

A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed.  There is some scope for students to be involved in negotiating and evaluating some assessment.

In addition to each of your module assessments you will take a programme level assessment in each of the first and second year of your programme. This is designed to assess your understanding of everything you have been taught and to help you to understand how different elements of your degree fit together to make a coherent programme. 

You will be given weekly directed activities to complete in each module. These will contribute marks towards the final module assessment and reward engagement with the content of the module. They will also help you to check your understanding of what has been taught. Some of these activities may include further reading or preparation tasks for seminars. Some of the tasks will be completed online and may include quizzes which provide you with instant feedback on your understanding of the module content. In some modules lecturers may place some of the taught content on videos which you may be required to watch prior to attending a class. This will free up time for you to work on meaningful projects in class. 

On this programme there are some assessments which are marked on a pass/fail basis rather than graded. Please note that these assessments are excluded from the calculations made to produce the figures published in the Key Information Set (KIS) for this programme/subject.

Entry Requirements >

Typically, our entry offer for this degree course is 104 UCAS tariff points.

Other requirements: For the old GCSE system we require grade C or above and for the new GCSE grading system we will accept grade 4 or higher in English Language​.

We welcome students with a wide range of qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs and accredited Access courses.  We treat every application on its own merits; we value highly the experience you illustrate in your personal statement.

If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another higher education institution, you may be able to enter the course at Level 5 or 6. For more information, read our student guide to the Recognition of Prior Certified Learning

We accept a variety of international equivalent qualifications and Leeds Trinity interviews international candidates. Typically, this is a call at a mutually convenient time. 

If individuals fall slightly short of the expected UCAS points needed for course entry, but have relevant experience and expertise in the sector, we would still welcome and consider such applications.

Additional Costs
We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:
  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015
  • Field trips may occur during this course and either fully or partly subsidised by the University 
  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online​

Placement Opportunities

Typically Early Childhood Studies placements have taken place in schools, nurseries, children's centres, family welfare/support groups, health clinics, the Police, pupil referral units and hospitals. Students have taken up placements here in Leeds, in their home town or overseas.

Graduate Opportunities

When you graduate you will be able to choose from a wide range of prospects within the children’s workforce - nurseries, schools, hospitals, family support, medical centres, museums and leisure facilities. You can also undertake further study in teacher training, speech and language or play therapy; in addition to a Masters degree in Psychology, Family Support and Education.
