Course Information

About this course >

You'll learn from research-active academics with extensive experience as social care and family support practitioners. They'll work with you to help you develop effective practice in a range of settings – from social care and health, to education.

Their approach to learning and teaching is underpinned by theoretical knowledge, the latest research and contemporary issues facing family support. They're well-connected with local employers who provide specialist services in family support and early help, and regularly consult with them to ensure the course content meets the needs of the sector.

We keep our class sizes small so we can give you the personal support you need to flourish – whether you're already experienced in the area of family support, you want to change careers or you're a recent graduate. You'll have the chance to complete work-based learning assessments, or we'll work with you to arrange professional work placements as part of your course.

By the time you graduate, you'll have had the chance to critically reflect on your practice, learn from evidence-informed practice, and contribute to the development of practice knowledge in family support.

Developing Practitioner Enquiry

Full-time students attend two evenings per week in term-time (Wednesday and Thursday, 4.00pm - 6.30pm)

Part-time students attend one evening per week (Thursday 4.00pm - 6.30pm)

Semester two – January to March

Core

Reflective evidence-based child and family welfare practice

Full-time students attend two evenings per week in term-time (Wednesday and Thursday, 4.00pm - 6.30pm)

Semester three – April to July

Core

Dissertation or Major Study:

Students can opt for either an empirical dissertation or a literature-based major study

Supporting Social Development and Emotional Wellbeing in Children, Young People and Families

OR

International Perspectives on Child Welfare

Both part-time and full-time students submit their completed study in September, giving you a full year to complete your study

Part-time students complete this 60-credit optional module in year 2


Learning and Teaching >

Real world teaching and learning strategies will be developed, in consultation with stakeholders including families, local employers, providing specialist services in family support and early help. Research active educators are in a position to ensure that our students will develop effective practice, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and current research.

As a team of experienced practitioner educators, working in a smaller institution, we are able to offer tailored support to meet the needs of busy working professionals, already experienced in the area of child and family support.

The research methods element of the MA will give the necessary grounding for future research studies and the development of innovative practice. Students are encouraged to actively engage in ongoing research projects with course tutors, with a view to identifying potential M.Phil. and PhD. level research studies, on completion of the MA.

Assessment
Assessments are on a continuous basis and involve a combination of essays, portfolios, presentations and assignments. Students wishing to complete the MA course will be required to submit a 12,000 word dissertation which will be based on a critical reflection of their professional practice.

Entry Requirements >

A good (2:2 or above) BA or BSc degree in a relevant area
  • People with degrees in non-related subjects will also be considered, if they can demonstrate relevant paid or voluntary work experience and a commitment to study.  Additionally candidates without a BA/BSc may be considered where they can demonstrate evidence of equivalent prior learning and experience through Leeds Trinity assessment of APL.
  • be a practitioner with normally six-months’ experience of ongoing engagement in work with children, young people and families.
  • or have equivalent relevant paid or voluntary employment/work experience involving direct support of children, young people and families
  • be able to work with groups of children and access support from experienced professional colleagues
  • support and agreement of employer through confirmation of support for study, verification of experience and allocation of a mentor (pastoral support).
  • or be willing to complete a family support placement – this is individually negotiated to fit with any current work commitments you may have.
  • have a satisfactory DBS certificate to be accepted on to the programme. (You are likely to be working with vulnerable children and families).

If English is not your first language IELTS 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any component) or equivalent is the minimum requirement.

Graduates of the MA in Family Support will have the opportunity to enhance career progression in a range of children's services areas at both practitioner and manager level, either directly in or associated with family support practice, including: Leadership of family support services; strategic and policy development and MRes and PhD research work in family support.​
